Shelters and Evacuation

In the event of an emergency, New Hanover County may order residents to evacuate from dangerous areas and may choose to open shelters. The type of emergency and area affected determines evacuation areas as well as where and how many shelters will be opened.

Emergency Evacuation Shelters
The list below indicates predetermined locations that may be used during an emergency that constitutes opening a emergency evacuation shelter.

Evacuating vs. Sheltering in Place
When creating your family’s emergency response plan, make sure it includes a plan for evacuating and staying at home, also referred to as “sheltering in place.” Visit Ready.gov for tips on devising a plan for each of these scenarios.
